Tiger Woods

Howell will follow Tiger's example
Posted Thursday, February 01, 2007 2:58:17 PM by Blog57 Team
American Charles Howell III, second twice this season in his first three PGA Tour starts, plans to take a leaf out of Tiger Woods's book at this week's Phoenix Open in Scottsdale, Arizona. Howell chased the world number one hard at last week's Buick Invitational outside San Diego before having to settle for the 10th runner-up spot of his career. "If you look at Tiger as he came down the stretch on Sunday, he got into some holes where he was really just trying to get the ball in the fairway," Howell told reporters at the TPC Scottsdale on Tuesday. "He almost went into a threequarter or a punchy-type shot. That's a lot more instinctive than it is mechanics, and that's the direction that I'm slowly trying to get to. "I grew up with mechanics and I love mechanics," added the 27-year-old from Augusta, whose only PGA Tour victory came at the 2002 Michelob Championship....

2006: A LOOK BACK Athletes & Adversity
Posted Monday, January 01, 2007 12:59:29 PM by Blog57 Team
For those who thought sports was about dealing with adversity, 2006 was for you. Almost no one came through it unscathed. Not Tiger Woods, who put together one of the greatest second-half runs golf has ever seen, but only after burying his father and dearest friend, Earl Woods. Not Ben Roethlisberger, who won a Super Bowl in February, crashed his motorcycle in June and was laid up again by an emergency appendectomy just before the Steelers' opener in September. Small wonder he struggled to regain his grip on a shaky team that likely won't make the playoffs the season after winning it all. Not Floyd Landis, whose too-good-to-be true comeback win at the Tour de France apparently was. Nor Justin Gatlin, who went from Olympic and world 100-meter sprint champ to chump when his drug test, too, came back positive....

Woods to skip Mercedes-Benz event

Tiger Woods will skip the US PGA Tour's season-opening Mercedes-Benz Championship in Hawaii next week, the world No.1 has confirmed. It will be the second year in a row, and the third time in his career, that Woods has absented himself from the elite event open only to tournament winners from the previous season. "I've decided to make my 2007 PGA Tour start at the Buick Invitational, January 25-28, at Torrey Pines Golf Course in La Jolla, California," said Woods. "I've had good success there, winning four times and am the two-time defending champion. "More importantly, it will give me much needed extra time with my family." Woods, who took a ski holiday with his family after winning the unofficial Target World Challenge on December 17, said he hadn't spent enough time on the golf course to prepare adequately for next week's tournament....

Buick/Tiger Woods Video Goes Viral
Posted Tuesday, November 14, 2006 1:08:26 PM by Blog57 Team
Adweek reports that Buick's one-minute video for its 2007 Enclave SUV had moved up to eighth place on YouTube by the morning of November 10th, only one day after posted. The video is designed to look like it was created by an amateur who snuck onto the set while the brand was filming a commercial for the SUV with Tiger Woods. The image is fuzzy, the angle unstable, and the video ends when one of the crew realizes that there is an errant cameraman in their midst. But the amateur quality was neatly scripted. Dave Darovitz, Buick's communications manager, explains, "The goal was to get people talking, not just on YouTube but on the auto blogs. We engineered the spot on the PR side and worked with marketing to create this disruptive approach to get the word out about the Enclave and to get Tiger involved." The model will replace the Buick Rainier and Rendezvous SUVs, as GM aims to streamline its offerings....

Tiger Regains No. 1 World Ranking

Tiger Woods regained the top spot in the Official World Golf Ranking following his fourth Masters title at Augusta National on Sunday. Woods survived a sudden death playoff against Chris DiMarco to win his first major since the 2002 U.S. Open. Woods earned his ninth major championship and his 43rd victory overall on the PGA Tour. Vijay Singh, the 2000 Masters winner, was relegated to the second spot in the rankings. Ernie Els remained at No. 3 followed by 2004 Masters champion Phil Mickelson. Two-time U.S. Open winner Retief Goosen was next at No. 5, while Padraig Harrington stayed put at No. 6. DiMarco, who held the 36-hole lead at the Masters, was passed by Woods as the third round was completed Sunday morning, but put together a valiant comeback to force the playoff....

Sportsbook.com, the world's largest online sportsbook and casino, has posted odds on who will be declared the Sports Illustrated Sportsman of the Year for 2006. Considered one of the most prestigious awards in sport, the title seems destined to go to one of two athletes - Tiger Woods or Roger Federer, two men that put together among the most dominant seasons in their respective careers. Woods, a two-time recipient of the award (1996 and 2000), is the favorite at 5-2 after winning the British Open and PGA Championships this season and putting together a streak of five straight tournament wins. Woods won 8 of the 15 tournaments he entered in 2006, many after the tragic passing of his father earlier in the season. Federer meanwhile continues to dominate the ATP tour and is regarded by many as potentially the greatest tennis player of all-time....

Tiger Woods Forms Golf Course Design Firm
Posted Wednesday, November 08, 2006 2:59:44 AM by Blog57 Team
Tiger Woods said Monday he is forming golf course design firm Tiger Woods Design, and will serve as chairman of the company. "My goal is to provide a unique collection of amazing courses all over the world that represent what I love about golf," Woods said. "I'm very excited to announce the formation of this company and get to work on finding the right projects for my first few courses." Woods said the firm's global strategy will appeal to all skill levels, and will seek unique properties for course development. The company is currently reviewing projects and bids for their design services. "There are golfers everywhere that may never get a chance to play a links course in Scotland, a tree-lined course in America or the sand belts of Australia," Woods said. "Hopefully I can bring some of those elements into their backyards." "Friends like Jack Nicklaus and Tom Fazio have been a tremendous help by sharing their support and advice on this new venture....

Tiger Woods PGA Tour 2007 (360) for XBO video game review and cheats

Tiger's second outing on the Xbox 360 remedies many of the problems that made the 360 version of PGA Tour 06 so lackluster. This time around PGA Tour features double the number of courses, many more play modes and a new aiming system that's quite a bit more realistic and unforgiving then its predecessor. There are a huge variety of things to do in PGA Tour 07 and thanks to the excellent character generation and advancement system you'll probably want to do all of them. You're given a mind blowing number of options for customizing both your character's appearance and their golf swing. These tools are powerful enough for you to create a fairly realistic digital representation of yourself or alternatively a 500 pound albino golfing monster with a Mohawk. Advancing your golfer's stats through play is compelling and you'll go from a mediocre no name to a Tiger-esque juggernaut....

Phil, Tiger missing no-fun Tour finale
Posted Saturday, November 04, 2006 7:12:32 AM by Blog57 Team
ATLANTA ? Look at all the fun Tiger Woods and Phil Mickelson are missing. An end-of-the-year bash for the top 30 on the PGA Tour money list turned into a final exam Thursday at the Tour Championship. Retief Goosen and Joe Durant shared the lead at 2-under 68, the highest score to lead an opening round at East Lake, and only six other players managed to break par in cool, blustery conditions. Goosen kept trying to squeeze tee shots into the fairway, the wind blowing sideways on just about every hole. Ernie Els was a part-time player, part-time gardener while clearing pine needles out of the line of his putts. Davis Love III bogeyed the first three holes on his way to his highest score to par as a pro, a 12-over 82 with no birdies. Perhaps the only consolation is the $1.17 million for the winner at the end of the week....
