Best golf tips are fundamental

The average golfer gets so bogged down in details that he or she often ignores simple fundamentals that would lower scores. Magazines, books and Web sites devoted to the game bombard golf fans with tips that tend to be oversimplified or unnecessarily technical. In either case, weekend hacks wind up confused and no nearer to lasting improvement than before they read the words. As sound as those bits of advice may be for specific players, they're of little use to the golfer who wants only to move from triple- to double-digit scoring, or maybe escape the 90s and breathe the sweet smell of the 80s. What single piece of advice that counts most toward lowering scores would seven Houston-area pros give a room full of wide-eyed chops? The old 'P-G-A'"I don't think enough amateurs work on the old P-G-A checklist: posture, grip and alignment," said Dave Altemus of Royal Oaks Country Club....

Today, January 23, 2007 the Iranian National News Agency IRNA, the Islamic Republic News Agency issued a statement from the Supreme Leader of Iran Ayatollah Ali Khamenei. Ayatollah Ali Khamenei said: People of Earth. First of all I am extremely tired of seeing my name constantly misspelled in the newspapers outside of Iran. It isnt Khomeini, Khameini, Hameini, or Chameini, its Khamenei. Think of it this way. The K which stands for King is silent. I normally remain silent and let my puppet president Mahmoud Ahmadinejad do my speaking for me. Think of President Mahmoud Ahmidinejad, the titular head of Iran as my consigliore, Don Corleones mouthpiece in the Godfather, Tom Hagen played by Robert Duvall. Robert Duvall is 76 years old. My new wife Anna Nicole Smith keeps telling me that I look much older than my 69 years because of the way that I dress in my black Robe and black turban, and my long white beard and because I walk hunched over with my cane....

From the tee boxes, all you can see for miles and miles around is the aqua-blue splendor of the Caribbean, two miles straight down and 100 miles straight out toward Cuba. This the White Witch golf course, which Robert Von Hagge and Rick Baril have carved out of native rock from the sides of mountain terrain. And from the fairways, all you can see are the remnants of the Rose Hall Plantation of the 1800s, the early aqueducts and sugar mills in this historic acreage just outside Montego Bay, Jamaica. This is the Three Palms Ocean Course of the Wyndham Rose Hall Resort and Country Club, sister course of the White Witch. The caddies will tell you the story of Annee Palmer, the notorious former owner of Rose Hall who murdered her three husbands one by one and had them secretly buried near the beach, each under a palm tree....

Clearly not in the pink of his batting health, Team India opener Virender Sehwag hit the golf greens hoping to resurrect the hand-eye co-ordination that makes him, despite a not-so-sound technique, one of the most destructive batsmen around. Sehwag, who took to the game some six months back, attended a golf clinic at the DLF Links here today and was seen picking up tricks of the trades from former cricket captain Kapil Dev. ''There are lot in common between cricket and golf, like the hand-eye co-ordination. And it helps you concentrate. In fact I find you need a higher concentration level here than in cricket. There, you can afford to relax at the non-striker's end. But in golf, you need unwavering concentration while playing each and every shot,'' Sehwag explained....

Another victim of Hurricane Katrina, The Grand Hotel, officially subtitled the Marriott Resort, Golf Club & Spa, in Point Clear, Ala., completely reopened Wednesday after a $50 million restoration and renovation. Half of the resort's 405 rooms, the pool and the golf club and course reopened in April. But more repairs were needed on the bayside of the hotel, which was hit by a storm surge from Katrina that pushed the pier into the convention hall, and drenched the main part of the hotel that's drawn generations of New Orleanians. Despite the renovations, a spokesman said the lobby, with its wood paneling and fireplaces, looks the same. There's a new chef and a new restaurant, the Saltwater Grill. The Grand's spa is ranked No. 1, its golf course No. 2 and its pool No. 3 among the more than 340 Marriott and JW Marriott hotels in North America....

Reeling in shoppers

With a thousand fishing rods angling toward a blue ceiling punctuated by boat bottoms and propellers, customers looking up as they cruise the huge Bass Pro Outdoor World here have the odd sensation that they are standing under water. That's the same feeling Sacramento retailers fear is ahead for them should Bass Pro Shops Inc., one of the country's biggest outdoor equipment sellers, follow through on a plan to open a mammoth store in the city's downtown railyard development. Such a move would likely sink some of the region's locally owned fishing, camping and hunting shops. Although fewer Americans are outdoor enthusiasts these days, Bass Pro, based in Springfield, Mo., is on an expansion binge with a mix of scale, showmanship and unrivaled stock that shoppers drive hundreds of miles to buy....
