| Charlotteans hope for Golf Bullseye at PGA Merchandise Show | | Posted Monday, January 29, 2007 12:59:54 PM by Blog57 Team | | Two Charlotteans are down at the PGA Merchandise Show with an interesting little device that could help golfers actually lower their scores. Most amateurs want to bomb the driver or practice hitting hybrids and fairway woods, but the real way to lower scores, teachers and PGA pros will tell you, is to work on your short game. Locals Slade Goldstein and Izzy Justice have formed Justice Golf to market the Shortgame Bullseye, a training aid that comes with three multicolored rings and a stand that looks remarkably like a stop light. Goldstein said Justice had the idea for the simplistic device that tries to make the short game less mental, something most amateurs struggle with. Golfers place the rings on the ground and then try to hit balls into the rings to learn distance control.... | |

| | | Election aftermath! Get full coverage of the results from Civic Election 2006 | | Posted Wednesday, November 15, 2006 6:58:05 AM by Blog57 Team | | What do you get when you put 240 women into the ballroom at Sunningdale Golf and Country Club for dinner? Answer: a very loud room. Oh yes, loud it was as the all-woman crowd spent a girls' night out viewing the latest fashions from LifeStyles Women's Wear, iN Fashion and Jas Shoes, all owned by Sharon Lehman, in support of Western Area Youth Services (WAYS). In fact, it was so loud that when emcee Lori Fellner started grace, the room didn't come to a respectable hush until she was halfway into the prayer. But that chattiness and enthusiasm are two of the biggest draws of the annual fundraiser. To accommodate the overcapacity crowd, chairperson Marina Knox made arrangements to seat an extra 20 women in the club's restaurant, but there was still a waiting list of women who wanted to attend and had to be turned away.... | |

We just really enjoyed each other's company," said Pampling, who teamed with Kelly after Peter Jacobsen dropped out after having a hip replaced. Pampling and Kelly split $675,000 from the $2.75 million purse. "I think it's really fun to win with a partner," Kelly said. "I think this is a really cool format. That's something special. | | | New rules are making NBA something it's not | | Posted Tuesday, November 07, 2006 11:11:37 AM by Blog57 Team | | New NBA rules have cost the Denver Nuggets one basketball game already, the first one when Carmelo Anthony was ejected for frowning, or maybe it was gasping. Tsk. Tsk. Mustn't do that. A lesson learned is a lesson earned. There is a new sheriff in town, and in the arena, so that to be in the NBA you must be a solid citizen, an obedient player and keep your shirt tucked in. This goes for fans, too. Applaud politely, please. And ignore the scoreboard that urges you to GET LOUD! Fans may not agitate and players may not aggravate. Cream cakes will be served with tea in the parlor. There are so many new rules, certainly some of them will be violated out of ignorance, such as not ripping your warm-ups off when you come into a game. I have not read the actual ordinance, but I am guessing you must fold and crease your clothing, leave it on your chair and check your appearance for extra long nose hair.... | |

| | | HELPING HANDS: A medical clinic west of Delray offers treatment, plus a sense of community | | Posted Sunday, November 05, 2006 11:05:03 AM by Blog57 Team | | In the crowded waiting room of the Mission Medical Clinic, patients had hardly enough room to squeeze their way to the door when the nurse finally called their names. Five days a week, the clinic, nestled amid the plant nurseries and tomato fields west of Delray Beach, sees patients from as far away as Port St. Lucie. Some don't have proper immigration documents; others have jobs that either don't provide health insurance or offer only meager coverage. Here, at the clinic run by Our Lady Queen of Peace Mission, everyone pays $15. .... | |

| | | Measure A supporters stress need to maintain, repair parks | | Posted Friday, November 03, 2006 3:20:31 PM by Blog57 Team | | On Sawyer Camp Trail along Crystal Springs Reservoir, huge cracks fracture the macadam pavement. At Hoover Park in Redwood City, fields and bathrooms are worn from years of pounding feet. And at Coyote Point Park, bay waters are steadily consuming the beachfront promenade. City and county parks in San Mateo County need a good dose of TLC -- major and ongoing maintenance, parks supporters say. They've proposed a solution in Measure A on Tuesday's ballot: a one-eighth-cent sales tax dedicated to parks for 25 years. ``Some of our parks are loved to death,'' said Julia Bott of Parks for the Future, the Measure A campaign, which persuaded the county board of supervisors to place the issue on the ballot. It requires a two-thirds vote to pass. Measure A would increase the sales tax in San Mateo County to 8.375 percent, beginning April 1.... | |
