Golf tips: How has putting changed
Posted Thursday, January 25, 2007 1:07:34 PM by Blog57 Team
As part of my ongoing series on how we can learn from the great golfers of yesteryear, I would like to examine how the equipment and methods utilized in putting have changed since Jim Barnes, the first PGA Champion, put together one of the first golf instruction books, "Picture Analysis of Golf Strokes: A Complete Book of Instruction," in 1919. Perhaps no aspect of golf has changed as much as the way golfers roll the ball across the putting surface. The reason for this is that the putting greens themselves have changed drastically since the early days of golf. The legendary Byron Nelson, when asked to name the biggest improvement in golf equipment between the dawn of the game and his prime era of the 1940s and ?50s, answered "The Lawnmower." The earliest golfers teed the ball up one club length from the hole....

2007 is the year of weird geometry in golf
Posted Wednesday, January 17, 2007 3:05:30 PM by Blog57 Team
It's about to be a weird-shaped world in golf. The heads of drivers are about to be square, pizza-shaped and oblong. The idea is to increase the moment of inertia, or square the face, to allow for straighter drives. Look for square-shaped drivers from Nike (Sumo2) and Callaway (FT-i) and look for most manufacturers, including Titelist, Cobra, Tour Edge and Adams to release drivers that are different than anything you have seen. The idea is make drivers you will hit better than ever. "I think there's some truth behind the technology," said John Gamble, one of the Carolinas' most-reknown clubmakers and clubfitters and a regular Charlotte Observer consultant. "These companies have spent a lot of money researching this new geometry. I'm anxious to see if it'll help the average golfer lower his scores." Cobra was the latest company to announce a high MOI driver, in its LD (Limit Dimensions) series....

While the PGA Tour puts together the final pieces of the FedExCup, one area that could help the seven tournaments after the Tour Championship is allowing the money list to remain active. Tour officials will decide next week whether to freeze the top 30 players in the FedExCup, which ends after the Tour Championship. But there's a chance that someone who qualified for East Lake on points might not be among the top 30 on the PGA Tour money list. Why does that matter? ....

Golf course approved near Ute Lake

The New Mexico Interstate Stream Commission approved an agreement on Thursday that allows Ute Lake Ranch to construct and operate a golf course on the shores of Ute Lake, according to a news release from ISC. The project has had strong backing from Quay County area governments as a catalyst to kindle new economic growth in the region, the release said. Several Quay County Commissioners attended Thursdays meeting and have attended past meetings in support of the project. The ISCs action serves a twofold purpose of protecting water quality at Ute Reservoir while promoting economic development, the release said. In January, officials representing Clovis and Portales voiced their concerns regarding the Ute Lake Ranch development at an ISC meeting. At that time, Clovis Mayor David Lansford, who also is chairman of the Eastern New Mexico Rural Water Authority, said that as a proponent of the Ute Water Pipeline Project which would carry water from Ute Lake to Clovis and Portales he was concerned about water quality being adversely affected by the large amount of boat traffic the development would bring to the lake....

Golfsmith International Holdings Inc., which sells golf and tennis equipment and accessories, said Tuesday its third-quarter profit nearly tripled, but shares slid after market close on weak same-store sales growth. Net income grew to $3.4 million, or 21 cents per share, from $1.2 million, or 12 cents per share, a year ago. Revenue rose 10 percent to $94 million from $85.5 million last year, with the addition of seven retail stores over the year. However, same-store sales only rose 0.2 percent for the quarter compared with a 6.2 percent rise a year ago. Same-store sales measure sales at stores open at least a year, and are widely seen as the best indicator of retail performance. Operating income for the latest quarter also fell to $3.8 million from $4.1 million last year because of lower margins and higher freight costs, the company said....
