| Golf ball – it has dimples! | | Posted Monday, May 01, 2006 1:08:55 PM by Kate Grant | An average golf ball has 336 dimples. There is a wide assortment of golf balls from manufacturers like Callaway, to suit any individual game and circumstance. Some of the balls offer control, some offer distance, others are suitable for practice. You can find golf balls reviews, comparisons and ratings, and even get discounts or your personal logos on them.
The antique golf balls market is blooming, and avid fans collect the increasingly valuable balls. In the earliest days of golf on the eastern coast of Scotland, players used primitive equipment to play the game in a rather haphazard and casual manner. The first clubs and balls specifically made for golf were fashioned from wood. One documented reference is that of a John Daly playing with a wooden ball in 1550. Golf balls have numbers on them.
A single-digit number on the golf ball is there for identification; a double-digit number most likely represents compression; a triple-digit number most likely represents the number of dimples. How many numbers and which numbers vary from brand to brand, but they all have at least one number.
That one number is most likely to be a 1, 2, 3 or 4, but can also be anything from a zero to a 9. The single-digit numbers are simply there for identification purposes. If the members of a foursome are all playing a Titleist ball, for example, one player might play a ball with the number "1," another a "2," etc.
This allows the members to keep track of which ball belongs to each player. A golf ball might also have a three-digit number on it, usually something in the 300s or 400s. This number is letting you know how many dimples the ball has.

Through investigation, tips and dozens of interviews, police believe a small group of Amesbury High School students brought four dozen golf balls to the Jan. 13 game against rival Newburyport and systematically handed them out with the preconceived intention of throwing them toward the ice.Read this article in full with a Plus Edition account.Click here to learn more .... | |

| | | It's OK to admit golf is just an excuse to drink beer | | Posted Tuesday, January 09, 2007 1:12:12 PM by Blog57 Team | | GENOA, Nev. - "There are two truisms in Nevada," the Chamber of Commerce guy says, signaling for everyone to quiet down and listen. "I own my own pickup and I was just helping that sheep over the fence." Tom Metcalf doesn't wait for a rim shot. He already has the laugh track. It comes from a small van-bus crammed with 13 media members. Metcalf is one of the Carson Valley-area hosts entrusted with making sure the writers, radio hosts and TV types get a good picture of golf in northern Nevada. And he's doing it, sheep jokes and all (most of the "all" being unsuitable for a general-audience Web site). That's because Metcalf is acting like a regular golfer, letting the off-color humor fly. He sounds just like that loud cutup in your regular foursome.... | |

| | | Green paint popular at golf courses | | Posted Tuesday, November 14, 2006 11:17:33 AM by Blog57 Team | | As temperatures cool and grasses grow dormant each fall, South Carolina golf courses face a daunting challenge: how to keep their grasses green. Perhaps nowhere is that more important than in Beaufort County, where the tourism-based economy is reliant on its status as a golf travel destination. Green greens translate to greenbacks. Brown greens? Forget it. Traditionally, golf courses in the South overseed fragile Bermuda-grass putting surfaces with more hardy winter annual grasses to maintain their lush, green color. But in a growing trend, some are turning to a new, simpler and more cost-effective method: painting. With a few swipes of a power painter a couple of times during winter months, course managers can restore a putting surface's color without the hassles or headaches that come with replanting.... | |

| | | THE CHIEL Your right to par 72 | | Posted Friday, November 10, 2006 3:05:33 PM by Blog57 Team | | HERE begins the sad tale of Alexander Simonis, a home owner who could obtain no relief from the courts against the golf balls flying out of his view into his garden and living area. Within a brief two years, Simonis said in papers before the Cape High Court, his garden had been pelted by 384 golf balls, no less. All had been deliberately smacked in his direction by golfers aiming for the sixth hole at Milnerton Golf Course and missing, presumably. Chiel VII stumbled upon this woeful incident while seeking an answer to the second big question of the week do your neighbours have a right to a view of you? The magnificent view Alexander Simonis bought three years ago included the sweep of the golf course and lagoon against the distant backdrop of Table Mountain, with abundant and desired water birds, passing golfers and periodic, undesired, golf balls.... | |
